What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels called the pulp. When decay, a crack or a knock lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, which causes the deep, throbbing pain many people know. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans the canals and seals the tooth.

At Dr Ray & Partners Dental in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, we can take a 3D CBCT scan on site when a tooth's canals are hard to see on a normal X-ray, so treatment is planned around what's really there.

What to expect

From first visit to finish.

1

Diagnosis

We test the tooth and take an X-ray, adding a CBCT scan for complex cases, then explain what we've found.

2

Cleaning the canals

With the tooth fully numb, we remove the damaged nerve and clean and disinfect each canal.

3

Filling and sealing

The canals are filled and sealed so bacteria can't get back in.

4

Protecting the tooth

Back teeth usually need a crown afterwards, which we'll plan with you.

Is Root Canal Treatment Right for You?

These are the most common signs that a tooth's nerve is inflamed or infected.

A tooth aches on its own, or keeps you awake at night.

Pain from hot or cold lingers long after you've stopped eating or drinking.

There's a swelling or a small pimple on the gum near one tooth.

A tooth has darkened after a knock or a deep filling.

Not every toothache needs a root canal. We'll test the tooth and tell you what it actually needs.

Your questions, answered.

What patients usually want to know before Root Canal Treatment.

The tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so the treatment itself should feel similar to having a filling. Most patients are in far less pain afterwards than before, because the infected nerve is gone.

Usually one or two, depending on the tooth and how much infection there is. A crown, if needed, is fitted afterwards. We'll give you an estimate after your X-ray.

It can seem simpler, but a gap lets neighbouring teeth drift and usually needs replacing later with an implant or bridge. Keeping your own tooth is almost always the better long-term choice when it can be saved.

Yes. Bring any X-rays you have and we'll examine the tooth ourselves. We'll tell you plainly whether you need a root canal, a filling, or something else.

It depends on the tooth: molars have more canals than front teeth. We'll confirm the cost, including any crown, after your X-ray and before we start.
