What Are Crowns & Bridges?

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged tooth, restoring its shape and strength. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Both are fixed in place, so you don't take them out.

At Dr Ray & Partners Dental in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, we scan your teeth with a 3Shape intraoral scanner instead of using putty, and match the colour to your own teeth.

An onlay, fitted step by step.

An onlay is a partial crown. It rebuilds the damaged part of a back tooth and keeps as much of your healthy tooth as possible. This clip from our clinic shows one being fitted.

  1. 1The onlay is bonded onto the prepared tooth.
  2. 2Excess bonding material is cleared away.
  3. 3A curing light sets the bond.
  4. 4The onlay is smoothed and polished to blend in.

Is Crowns & Bridges Right for You?

A crown or bridge is usually recommended when a filling isn't enough, or when a tooth is missing.

A tooth is cracked, broken or worn down.

A tooth has a very large filling that's starting to fail.

A back tooth has had root canal treatment.

You're missing a tooth and the teeth beside the gap are strong.

If an implant or a simpler filling would suit you better, we'll explain why.

Your questions, answered.

What patients usually want to know before Crowns & Bridges.

A crown covers a single damaged tooth. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap.

The tooth is numbed while we prepare it, so you shouldn't feel pain. It's normal for the tooth to feel a little sensitive for a few days afterwards.

Usually two: one to prepare and scan the tooth, and one to fit the finished crown or bridge once it has been made.

A bridge relies on the teeth next to the gap, which have to be shaped to hold it. An implant stands on its own in the bone. If your neighbouring teeth are healthy and untouched, an implant is often kinder to them. We'll go through both with you.

It depends on the material and, for a bridge, how many teeth are involved. We'll confirm the cost after your assessment.
